LIPC - LOCAL IMMIGRATION PARTNERSHIP COUNCIL

LIPC - LOCAL IMMIGRATION PARTNERSHIP COUNCIL

The purpose of this initiative is to enhance existing partnerships to establish a comprehensive Local Imigration Partnership Council in Waterloo Region. Through the coordination and work of this partnership, a collaborative strategy that includes solutions for successful settlement and integration of immigrants and refugees in the Waterloo Region will be developed. Funding for this first phase was received from Citizenship & Immigration Canada to the Regional Municipality of Waterloo. The Region has contracted with the Centre for Community Based Research to facilitate the process, which consists of the following steps:

1. Forming LIPC planning committee; 2. Holding two Community Strategy Sessions; 3. Holding two to three Task Group meetings around 6 thematic areas; 4. Developing a local settlement / integration strategy; 5. Developing an action plan to implement the local settlement / integration strategy; 6. Presenting the strategy and action plan to a community forum for vetting and commitment to implementation.  This first phase will be completed by the end of February, 2010.

A  Planning Committee has been established as the Interim LIP Council. It is made up of an expanded Immigrant Support Working Group (ISWG) which is one of the working groups of WRIEN (Waterloo Region Immigrant Employment Network). Since the two LIPC Community Strategy Sessions  were held (April 14 & May 14, 2009), six Task Groups where formed and have been meeting and continue to meet until mid-December, 2009. These Task Groups will develop a strategic approach and action plans for each of their respective issues.
