Immigrants
In recognition of the huge value immigrants bring to the community and in particular those highly skilled individuals, the Waterloo Region Immigrant Employment Network (WRIEN) was formed in 2006 to make a real difference in Waterloo Region. The goal was to create local strategies to address immigrant employment issues. Therefore, WRIEN developed and its service provider partners implemented a number of programs and initiatives to help reduce the barriers immigrants face during both their job search and once they find employment.
Mentorship Program
"I find the Mentorship program very useful for immigrants, especially because it connects immigrants with Canadian professionals. "This program helped me to know people, to learn about the field I wanted to enter (banking). The program gave me the opportunity to talk to my mentor about the system, the culture, the qualification I need to succeed in this field.I was given very useful information by the mentor which I couldn't find on internet, and, also, my mentor facilitated building of relationships with people from economic field."

Networking & Recruiting Events
"Since arriving in Canada, I have found the programs implemented by WRIEN, to be very educational and information packed. having been trained in another country, my transition into the Canadian work environment has not been easy. The lack of "Canadian experience" and limited social network posed a challenge for new immigrants like myself.
With the introduction of WRIEN's Job fair and information sharing network, I was able to secure solid links that helped me in my career search. the information given helped me to better integrate and gave me an insight of how to apply to various organization. I am better positioned to maneuver some of the challenges faced before. I am also very confident that the added information gained; when included in my job search will certainly work to my advantage. Keep up the good work. Thank you!"
